500! Part Six

In keeping with the theme of having each character bring something of him- or herself to this celebration, Gilles and Elliot provide the iconic story of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, who were martyred in 300AD for refusing to give up their faith. Ironically enough, the Catholic Church initially celebrated them as both devout Christians and as a loving couple -- there is a liturgy for the marriage of gay couples that the Church today has sought to dispute and deny. But to add yet another layer to the irony, in the Vatican, not far from the Papal Palace stands a chapel dedicated to Sergius and Bacchus.
