Cork Pride 2011

You know how sometimes I'll make up a new tee for the guys to celebrate this or that event or cause. One thing I love more than anything else is the sheer internationalism of gay pride these days, with countries one would never think would have such events.

Now that's not to say Ireland would fall in that category, not by a long shot. To be honest, the reason for this particular image — in addition to the fact that, like I say, I like seeing pride extend around the world — is because Cork has such a very cool logo. For more info on their event, go to http://corkpride.com/.

If you know anyone there, tell them the boys say hi.

That time of year!

Wisconsin.

I can appreciate the difficulties of being a governor of a state where you're facing a huge deficit.

But Governor Walker, with all due respect, sir, you mightily screwed this one up. Yes, maybe you did make the offer to the unions to sit and work with you, but your subsequent handling of this made you the bad guy, and it's gonna take a whale of a lot of spin to turn that puppy around... if indeed you can at all, particularly when it looks like you singled out the unions that didnt support your election campaign. Sorry, sir, but that smacks of really bad grace.

I dont have a solution for you, sorry. I wish I did. But one thing I can tell you is that acting like a despot in a small middle eastern country is not gonna win you the quality of friends that you just may need the next time you come up for election... for anything.

Fun stuff returns tomorrow. In the interim, stop by standwisconsin.org.

Music, please!

New animation test!

It's still got a few hiccups, and it's not quite smooth enough yet, but...

See this?

If I get it finished (and I think I actually will), there's something really cool about this image. I had hoped to have this for the 1,000 celebration, but... hey, things happen, right?

Anyway, you'll see... tomorrow.

And what was the photo, you ask? Click here to see it.

Japan

When something like this hits, you never really know where to start. "Thank God I wasnt there" is usually the first thought, followed hard on by "Oh my god, what can I do to help?" — which is then followed by that distinctly human realization that, when faced with a calamity of this scope and magnitude, individually we feel incomprehensibly helpless and frustrated and angry at our helplessness.

I've been watching the videos, as have all of you. I cant imagine what it must be like there right now, save that, for most Japanese, it must be terrifying to know that not only are your loved ones missing and possibly dead, but there are two very powerful nuclear reactors just waiting to explode as well. And should you survive that, there is the horrendous job of cleaning up and trying to put life back in order...

... and I write this while looking at reports of the Wisconsin governor acting like a jerk and Kaddafi desperately clinging to power and Kim Kardashian busting out of a dress two sizes too small for her, as if any of that really matters. And maybe, in a strange, weird way, it's supposed to, to keep our minds off the incomprehensible and the insane. These are, in very real ways, moments that test one's faith in a benevolent God: it's almost impossible right now to think of any possible reason why He would allow so many thousands to die and let the true wastes of flesh and air live on.

But that's an issue for another time, I suppose. In the interim, what we all need to do is pitch in and help. Individually, we cant do much, but together we can at least make it slightly better. So here's my small contribution to the charities that are putting together aid for the Japanese: for the next month, until 13 April, ALL profits from my store will go directly to those charities — and I will match them, dollar for dollar. I doubt it'll come to a whole lot, but it might buy a few dozen blankets and a few cartons of food and medical supplies... which doesnt sound like much, but multiply that a few thousand times and it starts to make a serious contribution.

And in exchange for helping out, you get something new to wear this spring, courtesy my guys. Sound like a good deal?

We'll be back to the fun stuff later today. Think about this... and as always, thanks for reading.

/Sean

Kai's News! (27)

We're gonna leave this storyline for a while, I think. It's not over, of course: something like this never is. But we're gonna set it in the background for a bit and then come back to see how the boys are handling things.

In the interim, we're gonna change gears a bit. Check tomorrow (or even later today) to see what's next in store. It's time to seriously lighten the mood around here, eh?

And dont forget to submit your entry for the Win a Date contest. Send a clear headshot along with your choice of which character you'd like to spend a night on the town with and why to dnrfeedback@yahoo.com by March 31. If chosen, you'll see yourself recreated in Doc and Raider style in a future storyline and on a date that (hopefully) you'll never forget, :-) And just to give you an idea of who's a potential dinnermate for you, dont forget that in addition to our core six, we also have President Obama, some of his staff (Geithner and Hillary, for example), and some of the shining stars of the GOP, like Mike Steele and Mitch McConnell and even Caribou Barbie Palin. We have Aiko, the transsexual waiter, and New America (who's been MIA... for sadly obvious reasons). The president of France made an early appearance, if you remember, and we've seen Didi, Gordie, Trooper Al, and the still-nameless terribly rich snob that's shown up in a couple of the single panels (and we do have plans for him!). That's quite a roster to work with. So let's see what you would do.

We Interrupt This Storyline for an Important Announcement...

I know: you're used to seeing the boys in this chair. Well, not tonight. I've usurped it for myself because (1) it's a very comfortable chair and (2) I can.

So what's the announcement, you ask? Let me preface it by saying that this isnt an original idea but one I'm pilfering from another site because it's so damn much fun. Here goes:

How would you like to go out on a date with someone from the comic strip?

It can be anyone who has ever appeared, regardless of who they are or what their current relationship status might be. And when you look back over all the strips, that's quite a long list. Aside from our six principals, we've had government leaders, a few celebrities, even Jesus Himself on occasion. And they're all fair game.

But that's not the best part, oh no, not by a long shot. Because not only will you go on a date with whomever this might be, you will also find yourself in the comic, recreated in Doc and Raider style. Cool, huh?

So here's how it works. The contest begins now and will continue until the end of March. To enter, you send a photograph of yourself (a clear head shot is preferred) along with a brief (or, if you want, not so brief) statement about which character you would like most to date and why. Remember: the entire cast is up for grabs, so to speak. Let's hear your ideal evening with one of the boys... or one of the girls, for that matter. The winning entry will be chosen on the basis of how well you convince me you should be the one to go.

A few other rules: You can suggest something for the date, but no guarantees (heh heh heh). The date will run for a minimum of five episodes -- more, if I feel like it's going somewhere interesting. The publication of the date series wont be known until you actually see yourself in there, so dont ask me when it's gonna run. I have no idea: sometime this spring is a pretty safe guess. We'll find out together. By sending me your photo and entry, you give permission for me to use your name in the cartoon, but I promise not to do anything embarrassing... unless you ask me to, of course.

And that's it. Send your entry to dnrfeedback@yahoo.com. Deadline for entries is 11:59PM Eastern US time on March 31. If this works out, I'm gonna make it an annual affair, so let's get it off to a good start.
